Moving checklist

Week by week to moving day

Pick a moment to see what to arrange. Your PDF moving plan from the calculator contains a checklist too.

8 weeks before

  • Request quotes from several movers and compare what is included.
  • Decide what comes with you: sell, donate or recycle what you no longer need.
  • Give notice on your rental contract in time for the notice period.
  • Moving abroad? Check whether you stay within the EU: outside it, customs rules apply.

4 weeks before

  • Book the mover and confirm date, access and parking in writing.
  • Ask the municipality about a parking permit or loading zone if your street needs one.
  • Start packing the rooms you use least and label every box by room.
  • Arrange school, childcare and, abroad, the EU pet passport for pets.

2 weeks before

  • Pass your new address to your bank, insurer, employer and subscriptions.
  • Arrange energy, water and internet at the new address.
  • Use up frozen food and plan when to defrost the freezer.

1 week before

  • Pack everything except daily essentials; keep documents and valuables with you.
  • Pack an "open first" box: chargers, toiletries, bedding and basic tools.
  • Confirm arrival time and address details with the mover.

Moving day

  • Take meter readings at both addresses and photograph them.
  • Walk through every room and cupboard before the van leaves.
  • Check the inventory on arrival and note any damage on the delivery note.

After the move

  • Register at your new municipality within the required time.
  • Hand over the keys of your old home and keep the handover report.
  • Report damage to the mover in writing within the period in your contract.
