International route guide
Moving from the United Kingdom to the Netherlands
Route, transport options, paperwork and a practical checklist for your international move.

541 km by road incl. Channel Tunnel
The Netherlands is one of the shortest international removals from Britain, with several direct sea routes as well as the Channel Tunnel. Since Brexit, though, your household goods leave the UK and enter the EU, so customs paperwork is part of the move, and you need to register with your Dutch municipality soon after arriving. Below: routes, options, cost drivers, paperwork and a planning order.
Route and distance
For central London to Amsterdam, OpenStreetMap routing uses the Channel Tunnel (Le Shuttle) from Folkestone to Calais and then the coastal motorways through northern France and Belgium.
Direct ferries are a real alternative on this route: Harwich to the Hook of Holland, Hull to Rotterdam (Europoort) and Newcastle to IJmuiden near Amsterdam. From the north of England or Scotland a North Sea crossing can save hundreds of kilometres of driving; ask each remover which route they use.
| Between | Distance |
|---|---|
| London โ Amsterdam (by road, incl. Channel Tunnel) | โ 541 km |
| London โ Amsterdam (straight line) | โ 358 km |
| Manchester โ Rotterdam (straight line) | โ 485 km |
| Bristol โ Utrecht (straight line) | โ 535 km |
| Edinburgh โ Eindhoven (straight line) | โ 758 km |
Straight-line distances are great-circle distances between city centres. The road distance comes from OpenStreetMap routing (OSRM) between the city centres, checked on 30 September 2026.
Your transport options
Full load
Dedicated truck
A dedicated truck for your household only, with your own export and import documents. On a distance of about 541 km to Amsterdam, loading and delivery can often be planned close together; agree both days in writing.
Shared load
Groupage
Part-load services between the UK and the Benelux combine several households. It suits a small volume, but your goods may wait until the trailer is full, and you should confirm who prepares the declarations for your share.
Drive yourself
Hired van
A hired van is a realistic choice for a small household on this route: you book the crossing, present the goods to customs at export and import yourself and return the van to the UK.
What determines the price
We do not quote fixed prices. Volume in cubic metres, the services you book (packing, dismantling, storage, insurance) and your dates matter on every move; on this route, also look at:
- Tunnel, short ferry or North SeaThe Channel Tunnel with a drive through France and Belgium, or a direct ferry to Rotterdam, the Hook of Holland or IJmuiden.
- Customs handlingPreparing the UK export and the Dutch import, and whether a customs agent is involved.
- Access at the Dutch addressNarrow canal houses and steep stairs often mean a furniture lift through the window.

Customs, residence and registration after Brexit
Since 1 January 2021 a removal from Great Britain to the Netherlands is an export from the UK and an import into the EU. (Moves from Northern Ireland follow different rules under the Windsor Framework.) Your remover or its customs agent normally prepares the declarations; you supply a detailed inventory, a passport copy and proof of your Dutch address.
When you transfer your normal residence to the EU, personal property may be imported without import duty or VAT if you meet the conditions. Dutch customs (Douane) decides whether relief applies. The Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND) handles residence permits; if you bring your car, it has to be registered with the RDW.
GOV.UK: if you will live in the Netherlands for more than 4 months, you register as a resident in the Personal Records Database (BRP) and must make an appointment at your local municipality (gemeente) within 5 days of arriving. After registering you get a citizen service number (BSN), which you need to work, open a bank account and take out health insurance.
Relief from import duty is set out in Council Regulation (EC) No 1186/2009; the matching exemption from import VAT is in Council Directive 2009/132/EC. Both apply only if you meet the conditions, such as a minimum period of normal residence outside the EU and prior ownership and use of the goods.

Frequently asked questions
Do I pay import duty when moving my furniture from the UK to the Netherlands?
Not if you meet the conditions for relief: when you transfer your normal residence to the EU, personal property can be imported without import duty (Regulation (EC) No 1186/2009) and VAT (Directive 2009/132/EC). Dutch customs decides whether it applies.
When do I have to register with the municipality?
GOV.UK says that if you will live in the Netherlands for more than 4 months, you must make an appointment at your gemeente within 5 days of arriving to register in the BRP. You then receive your BSN.
