Moving from the United Kingdom to Portugal
Route, transport options, paperwork and a practical checklist for your international move.

Moving from the United Kingdom to Portugal combines a long road journey with post-Brexit formalities. Your belongings leave a non-EU country and enter the EU, so an import into Portugal has to be arranged, and GOV.UK notes that you may need a baggage certificate from the Portuguese consulate for your household goods.
Route and distance
Portugal is the far end of the Iberian peninsula as seen from Britain. For central London to Lisbon, OpenStreetMap routing picks PortsmouthโCherbourg, followed by western France and a long stretch across northern Spain before the Portuguese border. Removers may instead use DoverโCalais, Eurotunnel, or a ferry that lands in northern Spain and shortens the drive.
Ask each remover which crossing they use and whether it is included in the quote; on this route the crossing is a real part of the cost and the schedule.
| Between | Distance |
|---|---|
| London โ Lisbon (by road, incl. ferry) | โ 2,109 km |
| London โ Lisbon (straight line) | โ 1,585 km |
| Manchester โ Faro (straight line) | โ 1,882 km |
| Bristol โ Porto (straight line) | โ 1,234 km |
| Edinburgh โ Lisbon (straight line) | โ 1,966 km |
Straight-line distances are great-circle distances between city centres. The road distance comes from OpenStreetMap routing (OSRM) between the city centres, checked on 30 September 2026.
Your transport options
Full load
Dedicated truck
Your household is the only load from Britain to Portugal. That makes the paperwork simpler to track: one inventory, one set of declarations, one delivery. Agree the loading and delivery days in writing.
Shared load
Groupage
A part load on a UKโIberia service costs less for a small volume, but your goods travel with other consignments and you depend on the remover's departure schedule. Confirm who prepares your declarations and the baggage certificate.
Drive yourself
Hired van
With a hired van you book the crossing, clear the goods at the EU border yourself and drive about 2,109 km each way. For most households a shared load is the more practical choice.
What determines the price
We do not quote fixed prices. Volume in cubic metres, the services you book (packing, dismantling, storage, insurance) and your dates matter on every move; on this route, also look at:
- Crossing and routeChannel crossing plus the drive through France and Spain, or a ferry to northern Spain.
- Customs and documentsThe UK export, the import into Portugal and the time needed to get the baggage certificate.
- Lisbon, Porto or the AlgarveThe Algarve is the furthest point of this route.

Customs, visas and paperwork after Brexit
For customs, your Portuguese move has two sides: the export out of the UK and the import into Portugal, the EU entry point for your goods. (From Northern Ireland different rules apply under the Windsor Framework.) Most removers arrange the declarations through a customs agent; you supply the itemised inventory, a passport copy and evidence of your new residence in Portugal.
According to GOV.UK, to import personal belongings into Portugal, including household goods, you may need a baggage certificate, which you request from the Portuguese Consulate General in London. When you transfer your normal residence to the EU, personal property can be imported without import duty and VAT if you meet the conditions. The Portuguese tax and customs authority (AT) decides on relief.
GOV.UK also advises checking which visa or residence card you need to live in Portugal, unless you were already living there before 1 January 2021. Pets need a microchip, a rabies vaccination and an animal health certificate.
Relief from import duty is set out in Council Regulation (EC) No 1186/2009; the matching exemption from import VAT is in Council Directive 2009/132/EC. Both apply only if you meet the conditions, such as a minimum period of normal residence outside the EU and prior ownership and use of the goods.
